46 AGENCIES BENEFIT FROM HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION’S SAFETY NET GRANTS TOTALING NEARLY $6.5 MILLION

KANSAS CITY, MO – In its last funding round of the year, the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City (HCF) has awarded $6,485,000 in Safety Net grants to 46 agencies throughout Greater Kansas City. Grants ranged from start-up funding for new programs to funding core support for existing programs from agencies that have experienced a significant increase in the demand for services in the past year.
 
“As we continue to debate health care reform and as the economy continues to suffer, non profit organizations throughout Kansas City are continuing their jobs of providing quality health services to thousands of uninsured and newly uninsured patients, many who are accessing the safety net system for the first time,” said Larry Blankinship, Chairman of the HCF Board of Directors. “We are proud to award these Safety Net grants and support the work of these agencies in providing much needed health services to a vulnerable population in our community.”

At its November 19 board meeting, HCF awarded the following grants:

  • $30,000 to ArtsTech to provide oral hygiene education to 1500 elementary and middle school students as part of their Flash 20/12-N-Your Super Grill program.
  • $43,604 to Baptist-Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation to help pay for prescriptions, vision care, dentures, hearing aids and durable medical goods for the uninsured and underserved through the Kansas City Medicine Cabinet.
  • $90,202 to Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA) for its Safety Net Services = Strong Communities program.
  • $90,000 to Communities Creating Opportunity Organization (CCO) to mobilize uninsured and underserved constituents to advocate with state legislators to protect and build the safety net health care system.
  • $75,000 to Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas Inc. for the Allen County Dental Clinic.
  • $151,435 to Comprehensive Mental Health Services (CMHS) for communication system upgrades to allow patients to more easily access their providers.
  • $100,000 to Cornerstones of Care to partner with Children’s Mercy to provide routine exams and treatment to children in foster care.
  • $145,000 to Cristo Rey Kansas City to provide on-site health care professionals to provide medical, dental and mental health care to its students.
  • $100,000 to Curators of the University of Missouri - UMKC for a Saturday Academy and Summer Scholars Program to work towards increasing the number of minorities in medical careers.
  • $50,000 to Developing Potential to provide occupational, physical and speech therapy services to disabled adults in the day habilitation program.
  • $185,000 to Duchesne Clinic for core operating support.
  • $158,000 to El Centro, Inc. for the Health Care Navigation Project.
  • $98,000 to Good Samaritan Project to provide education and testing for sexually transmitted diseases in Wyandotte and Jackson counties.
  • $320,000 to Greater Kansas City LINC Inc. to provide start-up funding for a new primary care safety net clinic in Southern Kansas City, Missouri.
  • $20,000 to Harry S. Truman Children’s Neurological Center to provide partial funding for salaries in employees who are fundamental in executing integration strategies.
  • $100,000 to Harvesters to support its food distribution program.
  • $72,280 to Health Care Coalition of Lafayette County to create a new insurance option in Lafayette County, targeted to small businesses.
  • $275,000 to Health Partnership Clinic of Johnson County to help support salaries for medical, nursing and administrative personnel.
  • $90,000 to Hope House to hire two new women’s advocate for its Health Project to provide case management services.
  • $26,250 to Jackson County Free Health Clinic to hire a part-time Nurse Practioner to expand services an extra day per week.
  • $50,000 to Jewish Vocational Service to provide partial funding for a Program Manager and Program Coordinator for the JVS Cultural Bridge: Interpreter and Cultural Services program.
  • $400,000 to Kansas City Free Health Clinic to serve uninsured adults in its General Medicine and Dental programs.
  • $100,000 to Kansas University Endowment Association for salaries for staff at the Silver City Health Clinic to decrease wait times for non-urgent appointments.
  • $75,000 to KVC Behavioral Healthcare Inc. to provide psychiatric and therapeutic care for at risk youth in foster care.
  • $259,360 to Legal Aid of Western Missouri to provide legal services to patients at Children’s Mercy, Swope  Health Services  and KU Med Center through its Medical-Legal Partnership Program.
  • $60,000 to Mattie Rhodes Center for bilingual behavioral health care.
  • $250,000 to MetroCare/Northland Care and Wy/Jo Care to support the regional, bi-state partnership between Metro CARE, Northland CARE and Wy/Jo CARE to create a referral network to increase access to primary and specialty care for uninsured and underserved patients.
  • $60,000 to Mother’s Refuge to provide case management, transportation, medical service and prescriptions for pregnant teenagers.
  • $200,000 to Ozanam to establish a program model for working with homeless and unaccompanied youth.
  • $175,000 to Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri to improve and implement new health information technology.
  • $239,113 to ReDiscover to implement a client-center, integrated treatment model for battered women and their children with psychiatric addiction and physical health conditions.
  • $125,000 to Roy James Rinehart Memorial Foundation to provide dental care to indigent families through area safety net dental providers.
  • $172,350 to Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute to provide radiation oncology services for the uninsured.
  • $189,000 to Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City for uninsured patient access to the Home Medication Infusion Program, which allows safe administration of medication at home.
  • $110,727 to the Somali Foundation to provide services and health and disease prevention education to East African immigrants.
  • $360,000 to Southwest Boulevard Family Health Services of Greater Kansas City to continue to provide and expand services at its Quindaro location.
  • $96,857 to StandUp Blue Springs, Inc. for its Dental for Kids program, which provides donated oral health services to uninsured and underinsured children ages 3 to 19.
  • $88,033 to Sunflower House, Inc. to provide child-sensitive forensic medical exams to 200 children involved in child abuse allegations.
  • $120,318 to Swope Health Services for its Chronic Disease Case Management Program.
  • $257,703 to Synergy Services to begin an on-site medical, dental and mental health clinic.
  • $219,068 to The Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics to provide medical and nursing support to work with high-risk children with chronic diseases.
  • $250,000 to Turner House Clinic to expand the number of visits provided through the Turner House Children’s Clinic.
  • $103,500 to Unified Government Public Health Department for the Healthy Families Wyandotte and Healthy Families Johnson program, which connects families to services such as medical care, health education, alcohol, tobacco and drug counseling and treatment and mental health services.
  • $150,000 to United Way of Greater Kansas City to support a health-related position through the 211 phone information service.
  • $16,200 to Virginia Brown Community Orthodontic Partnership/Smiles Change Lives for computer and software enhancements that will enhance the organization's capacity to provide low-income youth orthodontic care.
  • $138,000 to West Central Missouri Community Action Agency to expand and support the Women’s Comprehensive Care Clinic.
